Innovation In Networking – No ordinary Migration

Abstract

We are in transition times between old and new technologies on the Internet. IPv6, DNSSEC, not to mention all the things that are changing in terms of applications and the way we implement them (cloud, mobile, Internet of things). Transition in IT is usually handled as a migration project. However, due to the scale of the Internet and the decentralized nature of it's management, this really doesn't constitute an ordinary migration project. But if it isn't that, and can't be handled like one, what is it, and how to deal with it?

In fact, when you think about it, we are implementing rather old technologies. Technologies that have been around for years. And we're really not making much progress either. Apparently this is even harder than it seems at first glance. You might even consider the possibility that it can't be done or just take 'forever'.

I want to look into some of the difficulties that we face in these project on different scales, global, national, organizational. I want to look into the role of government organizations in the Internet-Transition. I want to look into some of the aspects of these technologies that actually make the transition more difficult or even 'unwanted'. From insight into the things holding us back you can distill hints towards a solution.

I'll mention a couple of real-life situations in which the transitions have been discussed and decisions have been made to explicitly not go ahead with the transition. The reasons are illustrative for the larger problems.

Some subjects:

  • Immaturity issues of a 15 year old standard
  • Why we overlooked simple solutions and went headlong for DNSSEC
  • The controversial concept of Network Address Translation
  • The issues with tunneling 6over4 and how that might be a bad idea
