Gábor Nyers: The btrfs filesystem

SuSE Linux Enterprise

Abstract

Btrfs has been described as the next generation Linux file system, amongst others by the principal developer of the currently de-facto standard file systems on Linux ext3 and ext4. In development since 2007, in the official Linux kernel since 2009 and embraced by several distributions since 2011. With features like disk error detection and correction, copy-on-write, light weight snapshotting, on-line file system shrinking and transparant file compression, the high expectations of Btrfs are justified.

This talk intends to provide an introduction of Btrfs from a system administration point of view focusing on its concepts, current capabilities and limitations and the practical value of its features. A demonstration and a few benchmarks will also be provided.
