Ted Ts'o Filesystem and Storage Futures

What does the future hold in store for filesystem and storage technologies? Why is it that there has been a flowering of new filesystems showing up in Linux in the last 18 months?

There have been many new file system and storage technologies which have arrived in Linux in the past year or two. New filesystems that have recently become available inclde ext4, btrfs, and UBIFS. On the storage technology sides, we have seen the advent of Sold State Drives, Data Integrity Fields, and 4k sectors.

This talk will place into context the developments and changes in technology that have driven these new innovations, and what it means for the users of the Linux File System and Storage Stack.

Theodore Ts'o was the first North American Linux Kernel Developer, and organizes the Annual Linux Kernel Developer's Summit, which brings together the top 75 Linux Kernel Developers from all over the world for an annual face-to-face meeting.

He is one of the core maintainers for the ext2, ext3, and ext4 file systems, and is the primary author and maintainer for e2fsprogs, the user space utilities for the ext2/3/4 file systems. Theodore is currently on assignment with the Linux Foundation where he serves its Chief Technology Officer.

Rick van Rein is a trained computer scientist as well as an electronics engineer. Adiabatics and low-power storage are interesting for his work at GroenGemak, where he works for computers and electronics with strongly diminished power usage patterns.

Neil Perrin ZFS - the last word in file systems

ZFS is a new file system in Solaris 10. It was written from scratch to deliver provable data integrity; immense capacity; excellent performance; and simple administration. ZFS is based on pooled storage that eliminates traditional volumes. Probably the most compelling feature of ZFS is its end-to-end data integrity. No longer is bad data returned to the user or bad meta data used internally. When coupled with redundancy (mirroring or RAID) this provides self healing. Internally, ZFS uses a transactional architecture to ensure the pool is always self consistent. No more fsck! ZFS gets its high performance from its copy-on-write design (which turns random writes into sequential writes), multiple blocks sizes, dynamic striping and intelligent prefetch. Finally, many customers are praising the simple easy to use and understand user interface that ZFS provides for managing their storage.

Neil is a Staff Engineer in the Solaris Software Group and has been with Sun for over 13 years. He has been working in the ZFS development group almost from it's inception over 6 years ago. Neil has been primarily responsible for the ZFS Intent Log (ZIL), which is a critical component in ensuring synchronous semantics for Databases and NFS. He has also got his fingers dirty in many other areas of the ZFS kernel code, such as range locking, sparse file and generic DNLC support.

Prior to ZFS, Neil worked on UFS and in particular on logging (journaling) functionality and performance. He has a BSc (Hons) degree in Computer Science from Reading University, England.

Michael Adam Clustered NAS for Everyone - Clustering Samba with CTDB

Clustered storage is a very popular topic. Together with the Open Source software CTDB, Samba 3.3 allows for setting up a freely scaling clustered CIFS Server that shares a distributed file system - a feature that current Microsoft servers do not offer!

One of the major challenges Samba has to solve when serving files from multiple nodes of a cluster file sytem is keeping its internal locking TDB databases coherent while still scaling in performance as the number of nodes increases. Naïve approaches have shown this to be a serious problem, which has finally been solved with the invention of CTDB, the clustered implementation of TDB.

This presentation explains the problems Samba faces in a clustered environment and describes the design principles of CTDB. Then it is shown how to configure Samba and CTDB in a file system cluster. Features of CTDB such as recovery and IP failover are covered as well as newer features of clustered Samba like cluster-wide configuration via the new registry based configuration system.

Michael Adam studied Mathematics and Computer Science at the universities of Goettingen and Bonn. He has been involved with Linux and Open Source software since the early nineties. Since 2005, he has been involved with support and development of Samba and he has become a member of the Samba Team in 2007. In the past year, Michael has been much occupied with enhancing cluster support in Samba, working on CTDB and its integration in Samba. He works as a software engineer and consultant for SerNet GmbH in Göttingen, Germany.

Ben Martin libferris

libferris is a virtual filesystem that runs in the user address space and can be exposed through FUSE. I have focused on the FUSE binding at my OLS 2007 talk where I built up the use of the untouched rsync tool with libferris-FUSE mount points at each end from a simple example to syncing between PostgreSQL databases.

There are a few dragons to the later because you can't just create "a file" in a mounted postgresql database table, you always have to supply atleast the primary key material and if you have a decent db design the foreign keys too. The FUSE binding to libferris has been extended to allow the toughest case to work: syncing data into a postgresql table. Options were needed to inform the FUSE binding of what data it should wait for before it actually performs the underlying writes to the libferris API. Incidentally, this is not the only place in libferris where delayed writes are imperative. When you are performing an action like applying XSLT like the xsltfs: filesystem does, you can only get acceptable performance if you have libferris hold off write commits for output XML files until the entire transform is complete.

For these next examples, keep in mind that libferris sees XML as a filesystem (you can mount XML), and a filesystem as XML (you can get a shallow DOM from any libferris virtual filessytem). Also note that explicit mount operations are not really used in libferris. If you want to dig into a Berkeley db or XML file, just fcat /tmp/foo.xml/root/fred directly. Also if you want to get at postgresql data, use postgresql:localhost/mydb/mytable etc. This is an important point when combined with the exposing of libferris through a DOM or XQilla interface as you can get to a whole bunch of data through a single "document".

The combination of libferris-FUSE and xsltfs: allows for some interesting possibilities. One example is that libferris supports geotagging. Of course, libferris being a virtual filesystem, and me being who I am, you can access your geotags as a virtual filesystem though libferris. Unfortunately, writing digital longitude and latitude values into these virtual files is not the most human friendly interface. Using the thumb markers in google earth is a much simpler way to record places of interest. To solve this, I use xsltfs: to transform the geotag filesystem into a virtual filesystem that has the same schema as a KML file. Then, using libferris-FUSE I expose this KML filesystem as a single file though the kernel. Google earth can then open this "file" and your geotags appear as thumb markers in the app. The fun part comes when you add some more markers in google earth and press save. The file is written back the the libferris-FUSE file which then causes libferris to apply a reverse XSLT to the data and update its geotag filesystem. So you get to use an application that is specialized at editing a type of information, with no changes at all to that application, but you are editing very strange data instead of normal KML files.

Another example of the libferris-FUSE and xsltfs: combination is using OpenOffice to edit data stored in PostgreSQL databases or RDF stores. libferris applies transformations for you in its xsltfs: implementation and you expose office documents through FUSE that OpenOffice reads and writes.

Ben Martin has been working on Filesystem related code for over ten years. He has a BIT, MIT and PhD in Info Tech with experience from RDBMS, indexing, filesystems through network and security.

Ben's main project is libferris which is a semantic filesystem which also embraces semantic web technologies. The indexing code in libferris also supports Formal Concept Analysis which was the authors PhD thesis. He has presented libferris at OLS in 2007 and the Linux Kongress in 2005 and 2008. He has written around 10 articles for Linux Journal and well over a hundred for linux.com about open source technologies.

Romuald Vandepoel Clustering and Efficiency

This talk on clustering will define and describe how NetApp filers (storage appliances) deal with this feature, what are the available cluster modes like single image/partner/standby mode, what is the impact on the multipathing solutions of these options in terms of availability and costs and as well a view of what really happens in clustering at NetApp. A real Active/Active solution will be demonstrated, and a failure demo showing how failover negotiation happens in relation to the failure issue or maintenance window will be part of the talk. The demo will show how the different protocols that serve data will react.

Efficiency: NetApp is well known for its NAS solutions, but SAN solutions are not standing still. We will take the opportunity to speak about the basics of SAN and why backing up is not easy due to its design (taking a snapshot of SAN objects is not cheap). Regarding NetApp efficiency in disk space, there will be a description of the interesting feature of Thin Provisioning or how to optimize the disk space in a "grow as you go" model. A live demo will be presented on Thin Provisioning and Cloning that can permit a deployement of 100 vmware machines in a reduced disk space and less than 15min.

With a background strongly oriented in computer sciences, Romuald Vandepoel has successfully performed mostly Technical Support Engineer roles at high levels (up to L3 and Senior) for large worldwide companies like SonicWALL, Tyco Fire & Security and NetApp. NetApp was his point of entry into the Storage Industry, and he was Senior Engineer and trainer in SAN and virtualization Technologies for the EMEA Joint Escalation Team for the Virtual NetApp-VMware Support Program. Today he has a new challenge as an Eurek@-ITS Storage IT Consultant for the biggest ICT Solution Provider in Luxembourg.

13:55 Ted Ts'o The ext4 filesystem

This presentation will discuss history of ext4, its features and advantages, and how best to use the ext4 filesystem. The latest generation of the ext2/ext3 filesystems is the ext4 filesystem, which recently left the development status of 2.6.28. With extents, delayed allocation, multiblock allocation, persistent preallocation, and its other new features, it is substantally faster and more efficient compared to the ext3 filesystem.

14:45 Anton Opgenoort Heterogenous Storage Solutions in Online Banking

Anton bouwt graag technisch complexe omgevingen 'right first time'.

Alasdair Kergon device-mapper and LVM
I shall offer a detailed overview of some of our current and future development work. Topics, amongst others, will include:
  • the integration of LVM and device-mapper with udev;
  • recent work to improve speed and performance of the command line tools;
  • how and why we are supporting I/O barriers in the kernel;
  • planned improvements to our snapshot support.

Alasdair Kergon has worked on linux logical volume management since joining Sistina Software in 2001. Now employed by Red Hat in the UK, he is responsible for the development and maintenance of LVM2 and device-mapper.

16:00 Kees Koster Phrase matching and indexing in PHASAR

Kees Koster is a professor at the Department of Informatics of the University of Nijmegen in the Netherlands. His research interests include syntactic methods, two-level grammars, parsing techniques, programming languages, information retrieval, document routing and text classification. He has been teaching and researching these topics in Nijmegen for over 25 years.

Heinz Mauelshagen Remote Replication Target

The Device-Mapper, as a general purpose mapping subsystem, is part of the Linux kernel since back in the 2.5 development cycle and is shared by applications such as LVM2, dmraid, kpartx, multipathd etc.

Details of any particular mapping (e.g. a mirrored device) are abstracted via pluggable mapping targets (i.e. kernel modules), hence enabling addition of new mappings to a running system.

A new target, the author has been working on since late 2007, is the Replicator Target to cope with disaster recovery requirements in Enterprises. It allows for remote data replication of arbitrary groups of block devices as a single, write-ordered entity to multiple remote sites, supports synchronous and asynchronous replication and fallbehind thresholds to automatically switch from asynchronous to synchronous mode and back, beside other features.

After his diploma in Electrical Engineering in 1986, the author worked on the development of distributed planning applications for the phone/ISDN network of Deutsche Telekom and in UNIX systems management in a large development center, where he started to develop Linux LVM in his spare time.

In 2000 he joined Sistina Software, Inc., who allowed him to build a team and work fulltime on Linux LVM development. Sistina got aquired by Red Hat Inc. in January 2004. The author continues to work on LVM, Device Mapper and related topics, such as the remote replication target.

Jörn Engel LogFS

We are currently in the middle of a storage shift --from rotating magnetic disks to silicon-based flash media. With the change of media, there comes a change of accompanying problems. Rotational latency is replaced with large blocks and wearout. The change in media allows for two design principles.

Either leave the storage system from the device drivers up unchanged and fashion solid state "disks" that behave largely like traditional hard drives, hiding any differences in device firmware. Several device manufacturers have picked this approach, and for good reasons. It provides a market differentiator and an argument for higher prices.

Alternatively one can leave the flash largely as-is and change the storage system to match the new devices. LogFS is one example for this approach, providing a filesystem designed for raw flash and commodity devices alike. This presentation will give an introduction of LogFS. It will explain limitations in flash devices, show how to achieve decent performance with such limitations and --hopefully-- provide some enternainment for the crowd.

Jörn Engel has worked on flash hardware and filesystem since 2001. Apart from the occasional odd patch he has concentrated on LogFS for the last two years.

16:50 Jos van den Oever Strigi - managing search in your filesystem

Philipp Reisner DRBD 8.3 and Beyond

This talk will give insights into the challenges of a "shared nothing" clustering storage replication solution has deal with. Besides the challenges some of the methods and algorithms used in DRBD-8 are presented: data generation UUDIs, resync-bitmap, the activity log, detection of conflicting writes and barrier semantics mapping. The features that became available with the release of DRBD-8.3 will of course be presented as well: device stacking, checksum based resync. Which can be used to set up disaster recovery nodes in addition to a conventional cluster. In the second part of the talk the current state of affairs on the future evolution (DRBD-9) is given: transfer log on stable storage, more than two nodes, new ways of identifying the most up to date data (dagtag). At the end of the talk a few of the benefits of the new building blocks will get pointed out: Snapshots after the fact and the "follow the sun" model.

Philipp Reisner is CTO of LinBit Information Technologies GmbH in Vienna. He was born in 1975 in Vienna, Austria.

During his studies of computer sciences at the Technical University in Vienna (TU Wien), CTO Philipp Reisner developed the cluster solution DRBD® that is in the meantime successfully used around the globe. Philipp is an internationally renowned OSS specialist, kernel programmer and eminent lecturer on high availability at international Linux events. Since computers don't think, but are just machines, Philipp sees his task as developer in providing intelligent solutions for IT.

Armijn Hemel Practical experiences with WebDAV

WebDAV is an extension of HTTP to offer web-based storage. Originally envisioned as a protocol for distributed authoring and versioning it never got beyond web-based storage.

WebDAV is used by companies to offer remote storage to their customers. Examples of WebDAV for storage are Apple's .Mac and the XS4ALL webdisk. WebDAV can be a very effective webbased storage solution, but there are a lot of caveats, because of bugs in clients and intentional sabotage by big software vendors, which limit the use.

This talk will focus on how to set up a WebDAV server with Apache on a Unix system, what issues there are with certain clients, what you can do to avoid or circumvent these problems and how this impacts what you can do with your system.

Armijn Hemel is CTO at Loohuis Consulting, a consultancy firm in Utrecht specializing in custom webhosting, web 2.0 solutions, GPL compliance engineering and UPnP security testing. Armijn is serving on the board of NLUUG and part of the core team of gpl- violations.org. One of his hobbies is punching holes in embedded devices using UPnP, which he documents on his site: http://www.upnp-hacks.org.
